white text in wordpress editor

If you’re seeing missing or hidden text in the wordpress editor, and the tinyMCE toolbar isn’t being displayed as normal. There are numerous reasons for this, too many to go into now.

One of the ones I haven’t seen documented is if you are using the very popular sucuri plugin. If so, check your settings to see if you have hardened the ‘wp-includes’ folder in the sucuri settings. This places a htaccess file into the folder, which stops the wordpress tinyMCE editor from working correctly if your server does not have the correct mod installed.

So, the solution is to either remove the hardening on wp-includes in sucuri, or add the following to the htaccess file in wp-includes

<FilesMatch “\.(?i:php)$”>
<IfModule !mod_authz_core.c>
Order allow,deny
Deny from all
</IfModule>
<IfModule mod_authz_core.c>
Require all denied
</IfModule>
</FilesMatch>
<Files wp-tinymce.php>
<IfModule !mod_authz_core.c>
Allow from all
</IfModule>
<IfModule mod_authz_core.c>
Require all granted
</IfModule>
</Files>
<Files ms-files.php>
<IfModule !mod_authz_core.c>
Allow from all
</IfModule>
<IfModule mod_authz_core.c>
Require all granted
</IfModule>
